WEST WORCESTERSHIRE MP Harriett Baldwin has this week backed more measures which will give local people the chance to sack their MP between elections.
Harriett voted for a bill passed by the House of Commons yesterday (Monday November 24) which aims to hold MPs to account in between General Elections.
And she also supported amendments which strengthened the bill, which will now be considered by the House of Lords before becoming law.
Harriett commented: “Many of my constituents have written to me to support recall powers and I was happy to offer my support to the bill debated in Parliament last night as well as the for amendments strengthening the bill.
“If MPs commit serious wrong-doing they should have to answer to the electorate before the next election. However, they should not face recall just for holding unpopular political opinions – that’s part of the job description at times.
“I have always said that sunlight is the best disinfectant and I am pleased we now have transparency on expenses to ensure that people can trust their MPs.
“This bill is another important step towards showing people that as MPs, we have listened to the general public and are bringing even greater accountability to Parliament for those who transgress.”
