WEST WORCESTERSHIRE MP Dame Harriett Baldwin has offered her voice to calls for a pedestrian crossing to allow pupils to get to and from schools safely in Tenbury Wells.
The MP visited Tenbury High Ormiston Academy and heard about concerns about road safety as pupils arrive and leave school across a busy road.
Teachers are required to carry out supervision along the A4112 and Dame Harriett supported local calls for a pedestrian crossing near to the school.
She has written to the county council calling for funding to be allocated from the pot of money which developers pay to build new housing.
A crossing is already under consideration but latest updates confirm that the highways team is unable to progress the project owing to funding issues.
Dame Harriett said: “I have been contacted by concerned constituents about their worries, so I visited the school to hear local views. It is clear that a safe road crossing would be welcomed and I agreed to take up their case.
“I am not sure why the local County councillor and the local District Councillors did not request this when the new homes were built, but let’s try to focus on a solution for the benefit of children, parents and staff.
“With the new housing across from the school and other new homes being built on both sides of the river Teme, there is the opportunity now for councillors to ask for funding.
“I’m now calling on the county council to pick up the pace and develop a plan for a new crossing. At a time when confidence in the highways department is at an all-time low with continued road closures at Upper Rochford and across the Malvern Hills, this would be an easy and popular win.”
