FLOOD WARDENS IN Tenbury Wells have been out in heavy rain to prevent flash flooding and West Worcestershire MP Dame Harriett Baldwin has helped recruit more volunteers.
Dame Harriett wrote to all central Tenbury residents in 2024 to support the campaign for permanent flood defences and collected a database of volunteers who lived close to the centre of town and would be willing respond to flood events. Those who expressed an interest have now been invited to join the Tenbury Wells Flood Wardens Scheme tasked with keeping the town open following wet weather.
Sporting wet-weather clothing, the flood wardens assessed the drains in Tenbury on Thursday (August 27) and reported that they were functioning well, including one near the Kyre Bridge that has previously caused flooding.
Dame Harriett said: “I was blown away by the number of volunteers who came forward when I canvassed local people on Tenbury’s flood defences.
“The Flood Wardens scheme is now looking for more volunteers to join them and if any local residents wish to get involved I will gladly put you in touch.
“I would like to offer my sincere thanks to the wardens who were out on Thursday morning checking on Tenbury’s drains to make sure the town can remain open after the sudden heavy rain. It is encouraging to see the strong local response.
“Severn Stoke is about to finally get its flood protection. It’s a matter of when, not if, flooding returns to Tenbury. Individual property-level flood defences are on the way but I am determined to keep campaigning for a full, permanent scheme for the town.”
