Dame Harriett Baldwin MP outside Weavers on Church Street

WEST WORCESTERSHIRE MP Dame Harriett Baldwin has celebrated a Great Malvern pub’s contribution to local charities by nominating it for a national award.

After receiving the MP’s backing, Weavers on Church Street will be up for PubAid’s Community Fundraising Hero award for its longstanding commitment to support local good causes through its popular quiz. The well-frequented, fortnightly competition generates large donations for local charities tackling issues including homelessness, animal cruelty and food poverty.

Dame Harriett has been campaigning to support local pubs through challenging trading conditions brought about by increases in business rates, wage and energy costs.

The PubAid Community Pub Hero awards seeks to recognise pubs that go above and beyond for their communities, with nominations being judged from July.

Dame Harriett said: “During the pandemic we really noticed the absence of pubs at the heart of our local communities. Since then I have been delighted to nominate some great local pubs for awards in recognition of their incredible contributions to their local area.

“The Weavers charity quiz is extremely popular and raises vital donations for great local causes and I hope it continues long into the future. I wish Weavers every success as the awards are judged and look forward to my next visit.”

“Times are tough for pubs at the moment with the cost of running a business increasing across the board.

“We must continue to support them if we want to foster vibrant high streets and a strong sense of community, so please do go and use your local whenever you can.”
