The new leader of Malvern Hills District Council has pledged to put the economy, business growth and job creation at the top of his agenda as he takes on the role.

Councillor David Chambers is determined to see the district’s young people succeed as part of a ‘new era’ – with them leaving school, college or university ready to go into work, with a focus on high-quality apprenticeships.

The district’s new Conservative leader also said more housing and the best environment for families to live and work has underpinned his vision for the future.

Cllr Chambers, who represents the Broadheath ward, was elected leader at a meeting of the full council on Tuesday 16 May. He takes over the leadership role from Cllr Phil Grove.

Cllr Chambers said: “As Leader of the Council I am very much looking forward to the challenges and opportunities we have ahead of us.

“This is a new era and I want us to be a council that is proud of our past, but firmly focussed on the future, especially in terms of business growth, jobs, wealth creation and housing.

“We want to create an economic environment that attracts new businesses to this area, providing jobs for our residents and opportunities for our young people. In particular, I want to see us work with the district’s schools, colleges and employers to provide a new generation of skilled apprenticeships.”

He added: “On behalf of my colleagues and the council, we are very grateful to Cllr Grove who has served as leader with distinction and dedication and wish him well for the future.”

A new Deputy Leader has also been appointed with Conservative Cllr Melanie Baker, who represents Chase ward, elected during the meeting.

Over the coming days Cllr Chambers will now appoint the rest of his portfolio holders, overseeing the various roles of the council. A further announcement on those appointments will be made soon.
