MPs Reject Latest Assisted Dying Push

LEGISLATION TO LEGALISE assisted dying in England and Wales has been voted down by MPs today (Friday, September 11).

270 voted for and 286 voted against changing the law following several hours of contributions by MPs. Lauren Edwards MP’s Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Private Member’s Bill was debated and voted upon by MPs after an identical Bill failed to pass through the House of Lords during the last Parliament.

West Worcestershire MP Dame Harriett Baldwin voted against the Bill and has consistently opposed assisted dying.

Dame Harriett said: “After a long and respectful debate, MPs have voted against legalising assisted suicide.

“Today I have heard many powerful and compelling arguments from both sides, but I have not changed my views on this matter since I voted against Kim Leadbeater MP’s Private Member’s Bill.

“Experts have highlighted many clear flaws in this Bill and it did not offer enough protections for the most vulnerable people in our society, including the mentally ill.

“I appreciate all of my constituents who took the time to share their wide range of views on this issue with me.”
