WEST WORCESTERSHIRE MP Harriett Baldwin this week welcomed pupils from the Chase High School in Malvern to Westminster take part in a national computer coding initiative held in the Houses of Parliament.

The three girls were joined by the school’s head of IT, John Palmer to participate in the ‘Girls Get Coding’ initiative run by the Houses of Parliament and the sector skills council for IT, e-skills.

Harriett recommended the school for the initiative after meeting up with local pupils during a visit by Science Minister David Willetts.

Amber Scott, Isha Loudon, Hannah Jones took part in a coding lesson and met with Harriett and other students from across the country.

Harriett commented: “I was delighted to recommend the Chase for this initiative as I know they are heavily committed to encouraging both boys and girls to take up coding.

“As technology evolves, coding is becoming a more and more important skill and it is essential that as many students as possible understand the fundamentals from an early age.

“That is why I have championed Code Club – which encourages the teaching of coding at primary school – and why I was keen to recognise the amazing steps the Chase is taking to commit to teaching these skills to all age groups.

“Many of the jobs of the future will involve computer coding so I want girls and boys to be excited about Maths, Science Technology and Engineering subjects. I hope Amber, Isha and Hannah enjoyed their trip and were inspired.”
