WEST WORCESTERSHIRE MP Harriett Baldwin led a debate in class time to discuss flooding issues in Eckington and has pledged to lobby for a new bridge after a class vote.

The MP visited Eckington C of E First School as part of work the children had been doing about democracy. Harriett talked to 45 Key Stage 2 pupils about her role as an MP and led the children in a debate about the impact of flooding on local roads.

Harriett said: “One of the best parts of my job is to visit our local schools and meet with the pupils.  I was delighted to be asked to Eckington to see how new headteacher Sarah Breakwell is getting on.

“During our session, pupils raised the problems caused by the recent floods and they asked for a new bridge to supplement the beautiful mediaeval bridge currently servicing the village.

“We held a debate and took a vote and I agreed to write to Worcestershire County Council to look into this matter. I will report back to the school once I have had a response.

“The pupils were very engaged and I hope they have a little better understanding of politics after my visit.”

Headteacher Sarah Breakwell added: “The children, staff and I were very grateful to Harriett for supporting our learning about democracy.

“It is essential preparation for the pupils in order to become part of a democratic society as adults. Debating and voting on issues important to them is a key part in that”
