WEST WORCESTERSHIRE MP Dame Harriett Baldwin is pressing for an urgent meeting with the Housing Minister as yet another housing developer fails to finish off roads.
The MP was contacted by people living in a new housing development on the edge of Pershore concerned about the lack of progress finishing roadworks. She visited the site and spoke to local residents and pledged to contact Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook to pass on their anger.
Roads have been left unfinished but Wychavon District Council has warned residents that it may be unable to take action against the developer. Worcestershire County Council has also confirmed that there are no provisions in place to force the developer to finish the roads.
Dame Harriett said: “New house-building is important but I was appalled at what the residents of this new estate have to put up with and I was alarmed that neither the district nor county council seem to be able to act against a specific developer who is no longer replying to residents’ correspondence.
“The Government seems intent on causing chaos within local government by botching their attempt to abolish councils and that means uncertainty for staff and residents.
“In parallel, the Government is also binding the hands of local communities by taking powers off our councils to decide on local development and the doors have been opened to speculative planning applications and probably allowing more rogue builder to build homes where they aren’t wanted or needed.
“So far the Housing Minister has ignored my requests for a meeting to talk about these serious issues but I’ve written again and I will keep trying to get some face-to-face time with him to pass on the concerns of local people.
“We are supposed to be holding local elections in six months time and we are none the wiser about what those elections will be for and how long new councillors will serve.
“This is not the right way to run government at any level and my constituents need answers, not confusion and obfuscation.”
