WEST WORCESTERSHIRE MP Dame Harriett Baldwin has backed efforts to officially remember the efforts of more than three million Indian soldiers who fought in the First and Second World Wars.
And as the nation remembers people who lost their lives on active service in wartime, Dame Harriett was presented with a marigold pin to mark soldiers who fought in the cause of protecting the freedoms that we often take for granted.
The MP met with Dr Sanjeevi Bharadwaj, who lives in Lower Broadheath and Dr Sharath Rao, who are campaigning locally to encourage more people to remember those who served alongside British armed forces.
Harriett was also joined by Worcestershire County Councillor Mel Fordington who has taken on the challenge of promoting the Mission Marigold initiative across local communities.
Dame Harriett said: “We are at the time of year when we remember those who served and lost their lives from standing up to evil forces and we also mark the continue contribution of those who currently serve in our armed forces, whatever their race or creed.
“I was delighted to meet with Dr Bharadwaj and Dr Rao and hear their expertise With Remembrance Sunday and Diwali coinciding this year, it is especially appropriate to wear a marigold with a poppy.
“I am grateful to Councillor Fordington for bringing this to my attention and I am pleased to join MPs across the country who have offered their support to this initiative.
“At a time where there is serious conflict in the world it is vital that we remember all of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect us and our way of life.”
Councillor Mel Fordington added: “It was a privilege to engage with Dr Sanjeevi Bharadwaj and Dr Sharath Rao of Insight UK. With Diwali coinciding with Remembrance Sunday on 8th November, Worcestershire will observe both traditions: the poppy to honour all who served, and the marigold to commemorate the enduring sacrifice of Indian soldiers.”
