WEST WORCESTERSHIRE MP Harriett Baldwin has today paid tribute to Prime Minister David Cameron who has announced he is to step down.

The announcement last week followed the result in the referendum on the continued membership of the European Union and a successor will take over on September 2.

Harriett said: “David Cameron has chosen to step down once a successor is found and I am keen to formally pay tribute to his achievements as party leader and Prime Minister over the last six year.

“Under his leadership the country’s economy has grown by 13 per cent and a record number of fellow Britons are in work. At the election last year, the Conservative party won its first majority for 23 years.

“He has been a great and compassionate leader and it has been a privilege to serve as a Minister in his Government.

“A timetable has been set out for first the Parliamentary party and then the Conservative membership to choose their favoured leader and I hope that we find a worthy successor to David Cameron to become the next British Prime Minister.”
