Hong Kong has suffered a torrid year, with the COVID-19 pandemic following half a year of unprecedented political turmoil. The deepening US-China trade and technology conflict has also created massive challenges for an economy that has boomed as China’s main conduit to global markets. A political crisis triggered by Beijing’s decision to introduce a long-overdue security law has compounded the challenges, transforming the once-rambunctious economy into a deeply divided community and putting its role as Asia’s World City in jeopardy.
